Amount of Award

A whistleblower can receive an award of up to 30% of the first $100 million, and up to 5% of the net proceeds between $100 and $500 million. The maximum available award is $50 million. If an award is deemed appropriate, there is a presumption that the Department will award a whistleblower the maximum 30% of the first $10 million in net proceeds forfeited. Multiple whistleblowers may qualify, but the maximum amount awarded would remain $50 million. Rewards are paid from net proceeds, after payment of other costs, such as compensation to victims, investigative costs, and payment of lienholders.

Relevant Factors Considered by DOJ in Determining the Amount of Reward
  • The significance to the prosecution of the information provided.
  • The level of assistance and cooperation provided by the whistleblower.
  • Participation by the whistleblower in internal compliance systems.
